The State of the Venezuelan Military & Police with Maria Teresa Belandria

April 18, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Tuesday April 18, 2023 | 9:00 AM | In-Person at FIU CBC 152

Join us for a panel discussion on the future of Venezuela’s military and police.

As the presidential primaries begin in a fractured Venezuela, politicians and scholars alike have stressed that the Venezuela’s military and police will have a central role—for good or for ill—in an eventual democratic transition. To what extent do the Venezuelan military and police forces serve as Nicolas Maduro’s tools for repression and torture? What will it take to persuade the rank and file to support free and fair democratic elections? And how would a new democratic government ensure its military and police institutions are transparent and free from influence by transnational criminal organizations?

Join us for a roundtable conversation with Maria Teresa Belandria, Venezuelan Ambassador to Brazil and former international coordinator for the Venezuelan political party Vente Venezuela, moderated by Brian Fonseca, Director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy, and Adam Ratzlaff, Deputy Director of Global Americans.
