The Future Of Micro-Credentials in Latin America – Challenges And Opportunities

Micro-credentials have the potential to promote social and economic mobility for individuals in and out of the labor market in Latin America and the Caribbean. For training institutions, this modality can contribute to increased enrollment, especially of traditional and non-traditional students. The modality can also improve the institutional reputation and quality of the existing curricular offerings while fostering more and better partnerships with companies and key industry players.
Given these benefits, the Inter-American Dialogue, in collaboration with Coursera, is hosting a webinar on March 12 from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM EDT to introduce a guide for higher education and other training institutions, to discuss how to promote the offer of quality micro-credentials and their effective adoption in Latin America and the Caribbean. The guide aims to document the current status of alternative credential adoption, barriers, and opportunities for institutions and to finally offer recommendations and practical lessons for their effective implementation.
In addition to presenting this guide, the webinar will seek to delve into the challenges and opportunities for the use of micro-credentials in the region as a tool to ensure relevance and expand access and quality of education for work. The webinar will feature a panel that includes the perspectives of leaders of several institutions with varied goals and missions in the job training ecosystem, as well as representation from several countries – Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and a regional vision.
