As part of the French Development Agency (AFD) funded technical assistance for the implementation of the IORA Action Plan on Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Marine Environment, the AFD provides support to the achievement of the Blue Economy Work plan. The overall objective of the technical assistance (TA) is to “support IORA and its Member States in the coordination and implementation of the Action Plan on Blue Economy and Work Plan of IORA CGFM, with a strong focus on fisheries, aquaculture and protection of the marine environment.”
One of the specific objectives of this Work Plan is “to combat IUU fishing in IORA region”. In the context of this objective, Activity 1.5: Provide technical assistance and organise capacity-building programmes for the developing Member States of IORA to initiate remote sensing methods for identifying IUU vessels” is planned. Under this activity, the organisation of a training workshop on remote sensing methods for identifying IUU fishing vessels was proposed.
Satellite images are used for a variety of reasons, ranging from commercial to government imaging purposes. For the fishing industry, these satellites can help detect vessels optically or through Satellite Aperture Radar (SAR). These techniques can potentially detect all fishing vessels regardless of the presence of a VMS unit installed.
The main objective of this half-day online workshop is to provide IORA Member States with the necessary knowledge and understanding using use case studies on the use of satellite technology in combat IUU fishing.
