Geopolitics and international relations (1899-2024) in Europe and beyond

January 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

February 8, 2024 | 10:00–12:15 | In-Person & Online

In 1899, the Swedish scholar Rudolf Kjellén coined the term “geopolitics”. Already centuries before, scholars had been interested in the interaction between territorially embedded factors and foreign policy or international relations. In Europe, the field of geopolitics went to the background, even during the Cold War. Today, more and more analysts are using the concept “geopolitics”, but they do not always clearly define it (sometimes using it merely as a synonym for “power politics”). However, there exists a whole variety of geopolitical schools of thought to be rediscovered. At this seminar, a number of them are discussed, and also how these are relevant to today’s debate about geopolitics in Europe.

The livestreaming will appear on the page just before the seminar starts.
