Debating the dollar: Who wants it, who doesn’t, and what comes next

December 12, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

December 12, 2023 | 9:30 AM ET | Online

Many countries around the world are pursuing efforts to “de-dollarize” and some have argued for a new financial architecture that bypasses or replaces the US & dollar-led system. China is particularly interested in enhancing the use of their own currency for international trade and finance. While the dollar remains strongly entrenched as the world’s reserve currency, it is clear the international role of the dollar faces several challenges over the next decade.

Are sanctions actually playing a role in the de-dollarization effort? What’s happening inside the BRICS? How might financial technology impact the role of the dollar? To help inform this debate our research team is launching the new Dollar Dominance Monitor which will leverage data visualization to analyze BRICS-members’ efforts to de-dollarize, assess the impact on the dollar’s international role, and evaluate the rise of competitor currencies.

Join us on December 12, at 9:30 am virtually as we launch this new research and host three conversations on key flash points in the dollar debate 1) Russia’s reserves 2) The motivations to de-dollarize and 3) The rise of CBDCs.

This special event will mark three years since the launch of the GeoEconomics Center at the Atlantic Council.
