Chinese Assessments of Countersanctions Strategies

May 16, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

May 16, 2023 | 10:00-11:00 AM | Online

The financial sanctions implemented by the United States and its key allies and partners in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have been unprecedented in their scale and scope. How are Chinese scholars and policymakers assessing the effectiveness of these sanctions, and what debates are unfolding about strategies and approaches Beijing might develop to counter or circumvent similar U.S.-led action in the future?

Please join the Interpret: China project and the CSIS Economics Program for a panel discussion of this important topic, drawing on recently translated primary source documents. Hosted by Freeman Chair Jude Blanchette, the expert panel will feature Martin Chorzempa, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Barry Naughton, So Kwan Lok Chair of Chinese International Affairs at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, University of California San Diego, and Maria Shagina, Diamond-Brown Senior Research Fellow for Economic Sanctions, Standards and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The discussion will be moderated by Gerard DiPippo, senior fellow with the CSIS Economics Program.

This event is made possible by support from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
