Digital Report Launch: Tracking Transatlantic Drug Flows through the Caribbean to Europe

Join the CSIS Americas Program for the launch of a digital report mapping the transatlantic drug flows from the Caribbean to Europe, followed by an in-depth expert discussion on the evolving nature of the cocaine trade.
Transatlantic drug trafficking has produced alarming and lasting effects on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, security threats have been posed by powerful criminal networks with deleterious impact on public health. The Caribbean, which is also home to some European overseas territories, is a natural embarkation point for trafficking routes. Drug trafficking by organized crime has been associated with record levels of violence. Not only are the consequences related to drug trafficking worrisome, but they are also multidimensional as the region presents different vulnerabilities easily exploitable by criminals, including long coastlines that are difficult to patrol and a flurry of commercial maritime and air traffic that helps conceal illicit cargos.
This event will discuss the vulnerabilities of the Caribbean as a transshipment point, as well as factors that have made the European market attractive to drug traffickers.
