As Venezuela inches closer to the 2024 elections, the Maduro regime is increasingly using media censorship to maintain its grip on power and stifle public support for the opposition. With most traditional communication outlets controlled by the Maduro regime, opposition candidates will have to navigate a complex network of alternative media, complicating the opposition’s ability to present an alternative message to that of the regime’s.
This event will unpack ways for the Venezuelan opposition to compete in this hostile media space with an eye toward the 2024 election campaign. It will also delve into policy options for the United States and the international community to support independent reporting as traditional and non-traditional media outlets face serious threats.
