Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), Maritime Law Enforcement, and Maritime Security

January 18, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Centre for International Law is organizing a series of webinars on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Webinar on 18 January 2022 will focus on the challenges to maritime law enforcement and maritime security posed by unmanned vessels (levels 3 and 4 of the IMOs categories on the degree of autonomy). First, it will discuss the challenges to UNCLOS posed by the commission of maritime crimes with unmanned vessels. Second, it will examine the challenges posed to UNCLOS on the rights and obligations of coastal States and flag States concerning innocent passage, pollution incidents or incidents of navigation involving MASS. Third, it will discuss the challenges posed by unmanned vessels on the definition of warships and “other underwater vehicles”.

This Webinar will be of interest to government legal advisors and academics specializing in the law of the sea and the international regulation of shipping as well as representatives of the shipping industry.
